Budget Living Room Makeover

A few months back I decided to give my living room a complete makeover, something it’s needed since we moved in almost seven years ago.Budget Living Room Makeover My biggest challenge was making my husband understand that in order for me to completely remodel our living room I was going to have to make some serious changes, aka spend some serious money, well that didn’t go over to well since he doesn’t understand the concept of spending money on decorating or re-decorating. That meant I was going to have to do some serious bargain shopping and take on some challenging DIY Home Renovation Projects that I was a little skeptical about, but I recruited my husband, bought more decorating books and magazines that I can keep up with and started searching the internet for Living Room Inspirations and DIY Home Renovation Tutorials. It took me a few weeks but I finally finished my Living Room Inspiration Board and knew exactly what I wanted my living room to look like; however it was going to take alot more work to get the furniture and accents I wanted at a price I could afford, so I was on a constant search for deals and discounts spending most nights and weekends either on the internet looking for coupon codes or rummaging through discount department stores and local consignment shops.

It was a lot to take on at once but after three and a half months our Budget Living Room Makeover was complete, so i’m pleased to announce that my husband and I successfully  installed crown moulding,  put up wainscot paneling and built a fireplace overmantle  all for $300.00. In addition, we were able to find all of the furniture and decorative accents for $2,931 for a total cost of $3,331

Look for DIY tutorials on how to install crown moulding, how to install picture frame wainscot paneling and how to build a fireplace overmantle in the near future!

Okay, on to the good stuff….. Since Lighting makes a huge difference in the way a room looks and feels I wanted to showcase the way the room looks in both natural and artificial lighting conditions. Now without further ado, here is my budget living room makeover

The photos below were taken during the evening using artificial lighting

"Floating Shelves"

These Floating Shelves are a lifesaver!  They are fabulous for decorating but they are also hiding the ugly thermostat box on the wall; It’s right behind the picture frame on the bottom shelf. 8. I would love to know how you did your fireplace overmantle. Right now our fireplace basically has a white painted piece of wood on it, with very little detail. It needs help! My husband has a miter saw, and we just need an idea where to start. I love yours, but how did you figure out what you needed, etc? I appreciate your time, and I love your living room makeover.

    • Hi Cindy, Thank you for checking out my living room makeover. I am actually planning to write step by step tutorial on how to build an overmantle. Before we built our overmantle I searched the internet for weeks trying to find a tutorial and I’ll be honest, there wasn’t much out there, so we ended up winging part of it, luckily it all worked out. I am planning to share the details for every step in the process so that it will hopefully help others that are looking to take on this project. I’ll try to post it next week, unfortunately I don’t have photos for each step so i’ll try to be as thorough as possible! Send me a picture of what you currently have above your fireplace and I can try to help you figure out where to go next 🙂

  9. What a wonderful transformation! Looks like a totally different room! Very impressed…it is so warm and inviting and just pretty!

  10. OK. I have to be honest. I looked at the ‘before’ pics and couldn’t figure out what you didn’t like. I thought it was a great Living Room! Then I saw the ‘after’. Unbelievable. Totally unbelievable. I’m so blown away that this gorgeous space came from the “great Living Room”. You have a gift of seeing the potential….and making it happen! Fabulous.

    • Dona, Thank you for checking out my living room makeover and thank you sooo much for the compliment. I sincerely appreciate it!!

  11. The room looks fabulous! Can you tell us your paint colors? Thanks!

    • Angela, Thank you so much for the compliment!! I can’t remember the name of the paint colors off the top of my head, but will pull out the paint cans tomorrow and get the exact names. Thanks again for checking out my living room makeover and the sincere compliment!!

  12. Great job! We are starting to get ideas for our living room. Thanks!

  13. Hi Jessica,

I love your make over. You have given me many ideas. If you don’t mind me giving you my own opinion, I would have painted the brick around the fireplace maybe a heirloom white and I would change the ceiling fan to a vintage chandelier.
You have a gorgeous living room and I especially love the work you and your husband did over the fireplace mantle! Good job !!!!

  14. I love your makeover. The fireplace surround is beautiful. The overmantle and wainscoting are beautiful focal points of the room. Great job….I think almost anyone can go out with a bundle of money and put a room together, but I find it so much more interesting, challenging and fun to do it with bargain shopping and diy projects…not to mention the benefit of recycling items.

  15. I’m in love with the hints of teal and baby pink I see… I think you did a great job!

  16. Hi Jessica! I have been scouring the internet for an affordable way to turn our fireplace into a focal point. I finally decided to do something similar to your moulding/crown moulding addition to your fireplace and contacted my builder. They want to charge upwards of $1,000! I was wondering if this was an easy DIY project and if it was easy to do. We have installed crown moulding in a room once before. Could you please give me any tips or tricks? Also, does the area above the fireplace jut out in the center or is it just your wall painted white? Thanks so much! 🙂

    • Hi Erin, I’ve been planning to do a post on how to make an overmantle for quite some time now but haven’t done it yet mostly b/c i don’t have pictures of the process (I’m so mad at myself for not taking them) but am putting together a few visuals that will help people to understand the steps. With regards to the center I used various pieces of wood that I layered and then painted white. I’ll work on posting a tutorial over the next few weeks and will let you know once I get it posted!!! If you have any other questions you can email me at Jessica@myloveofstyle.com and i’ll be glad to try and help 🙂

  17. Hi Jessica
Can’t believe the transformation!!! Love the ?teal couch and accents of this color throughout. I honestly never would have thought of this color but it looks beautiful and very elegant! Thanks for sharing 🙂

  18. Bravo! Good job with your living room makeover. With the right lighting and decoration insertion, you can certainly achieve a brighter and sophisticated look. That renovation really made a big difference in your space. I love those wall arts you have there and that rug is lovely, too!

  19. how do you build picture frame wainscoting onto concrete walls?
And I must say I am so impressed with your wonderful work on your home.

  20. how do you build picture frame wainscoting onto concrete walls?
    wonderful work on your home.

    • Hi Yvette, Thank you so much for the comment! Unfortunately I wouldn’t know where to begin to tell you how to build anything on a concrete wall. I am at the beginner level when it comes to wood work. I wish I could assist you more 🙁

  21. Jessica, are you leaving those two wing back next to each other without a table between? The arrangements seems to “stiff” — not conversational. Does your family use your living room daily? It feels very “formal” the way it’s arranged. I love your color choices — very serene and comfortable, but the seating arrangement just doesn’t looks user friendly.

    • Hi Vicki, I actually had a table between the two wingback chairs; however since I had the baby my living room has changed quite a bit, it’s become more functional for the baby than anything. Once she started crawling, she also started pulling things so I had to remove a lot of the furniture and the things on them 🙁

  22. Love your makeover. I found your new sofa on Club Furniture website. Do you still like it? I would like to order from them but concerned about not being able to sit in it.
    Thanks.

    • HI Donna, Yes, I do love my sofa, i love it soooo much, but I stupidly didn’t scotch guard it and after Riley was born my “no eating on the sofa” policy somehow went out the window and then when Riley started started walking she Always found a way to get her dirty food hands on the couch. So now, it’s not the perfectly pretty sofa that it once was, but I’m going to have it professionally cleaned and scotch guarded in the very near future, so hopefully it will look as good as new, soon!! It’s very comfortable (in my opinion) but definitely scotch guard it before letting anyone sit on it 🙂 Xo ~Jessica
