I found a black metal coat rack at Marshalls last week for $19.99, a deal that I couldn’t pass up! I loved the style but wasn’t really digging the color, so of course knowing me I thought, no biggie, the color can always be changed. Since I’m giving my foyer a shabby chic makeover I thought it would be a great piece to shabby chic. This is the first time I’ve attempted to distress metal, but I thought it can’t be that different than wood, right? So I put my DIY hat on and got started.
Here is what you will need
- Rustoleum High Gloss Spray Paint
- Metallic Gold Paint
- Ivory White Craft Paint
- Dark Brown Craft Paint
- Sea Sponge
- Sandpaper
- Metal Coat Rack
Step 1: Sand down the coat rack
Step 2: Wipe the coat rack down and then paint the coat rack in Rustoleum High Gloss Spray Paint
Step 3: Mix Metallic Venetian Gold, Snow Titanium White and Dark enamel Brown
Step 4: Using a sponge apply paint to coat rack
Step 5: Once it dries mix Metallic Venetian Gold and Snow White with a tiny bit of dark brown and apply it to the coat rack
Step 6: Sand the coat rack along the edges and any other area you want to look distressed
And there you have it, a Shabby Chic Metal Coat Rack
I hope you enjoyed!!

you are absolutely amazing. I wish I could find the deals and then make time for makeovers. I’ll continue to keep up with your inspiring makeovers and hopefully I’ll catch on to some of this stuff and make it work for me. In the meantime keep up to great work.
hi .. i have 2 old metal lamps with glass tables … i want to paint them a cream or a whit e (still caNt decide) they are black … do i need to sand them or is there a way to remove the black …. i love your coat rack … what kind of paint do i need and where can i buy it … this is my first effort on my own….. thankyou
Hi Lesley, I sanded my coat rack. I didn’t sand it a lot, just enough to remove the clear coat. You could also use acetone to remove the clear coat but I honestly think that may take longer. If you don’t remove the clear coat the paint will bubble and wont go on smoothly; however since it’s a distressed look you could always apply a coat of paint, wait until it dries and then apply another one (keep doing that until the bubbles covered). The paint I used was craft paint that you get from Michaels, Hobby Lobby or AC Moore. I just mixed various colors until I got the color I wanted and used a sponge to apply it. It’s really easy, I promise 🙂
What color high gloss spray paint did you use?
Thanks!
