DIY Bassinet Diaper Cake Tutorial

I absolutely adore Diaper Cakes, they are such cute and creative gifts, not to mention they make the perfect baby showerDiaper Cake Bassinet centerpiece! There are a ton of different kinds of diaper cakes; however I love love love bassinet diaper cakes and when I found out one of my co-workers (who is pregnant with twins) was coming to our office this week I thought it would be a great time for me to make one. If you can’t tell I am super excited to share this very easy DIY Bassinet Diaper Cake Tutorial. There are several additional unique diaper cakes that I plan on sharing tutorials for as well.

Are you ready to make your own fabulous DIY Bassinet Diaper Cake??? Alright, let’s get started!

Here is what you will need:

  • 2 Shoe Boxes
  • Elastic
  • Fabric
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Rubber Bands
  • Diapers – I used 42 Size 1 Diapers; however the amount of diapers you need will depend on the size of your shoe box

Step 1: Place one shoe box inside of the other shoe box (vertically).

Step 2: You need to cut the Vertical Shoe Box down so that it looks like a bassinet would from a size perspective.

cut Vertical Shoe Box

Step 3: Place your newly cut shoe box back in a vertical position inside of your other shoe box and glue the sides and back so it stays in place

Step 4: Okay, so I’m going to show you what I did for this step, but more importantly I’m going to tell you what I wish I would have done and what you should do at this point. This is where I took batting and glued it around the edges of my shoe box; however what  you should do is cut a piece of fabric and glue it around the edge of your box.

Then you should glue a piece of fabric on the inside of your box (so that when you look into the bassinet you see a beautiful fabric and not an ugly cardboard box).

I would also cut a piece of fabric and glue it on the back of the vertical box (The box that is going to be the top of the bassinet)

Step 5: Take a piece of elastic and wrap it around your box loosely; then glue the elastic together and place it around the bottom box

Place Elastic around box

Step 6: Roll the open end of each diaper inward, until you have a tight roll

Roll Diaper
Wrap a rubber band around the middle of the diaper to hold it in place

Wrap Rubber Band Around Diaper

I wrapped 38 diapers (22 to go around the bottom box) and the remaining 16 were for the wheels

Step 7: Begin placing rolled diapers under the elastic on the box

Place rolled Diaper under Elastic

Continue Placing Rolled Diapers around box under the elastic

Continue Placing Diapers Around Box

Step 8: Form the canopy of the bassinet by opening a diaper up and draping it over the right side the top box. Glue the top portion of the diaper onto the box

Glue opened diaper to top of box

Tuck the bottom of the diaper into the elastic on the bottom box and glue it to the elastic so it stays in place

glue diaper to the elastic

Do the same thing for the left side of the box

drape open diaper on left side of top box
Open another diaper and drape it across the middle of the top box to form the canopy

place open diaper across the middle of the top box

Step 9: Decorate your Bassinet. Start by adding ribbon or a piece of fabric around the bottom of the bassinet

add ribbon around Bassinet

I Love Bows, so I made a large Bow to go on the front of the bassinet.

To make my Bow I took a piece of fabric and folded it so the two ends overlapped forming an X

Pinch the center together

Take a piece of ribbon and glue it around the center where you are pinching

Add a piece of fabric or ribbon around the canopy of the bassinet

Step 10: Make the wheels for the bassinet by grouping 4 rolled diapers together and then gluing a piece of ribbon or fabric around them

Step 11: Glue the wheels onto the bottom of the bassinet. You want to make sure you glue them on horizontally so the rolled edges are facing the sides

  14. I’m having trouble with the diapers on the sides of the box slipping down after the “wheels” are put on. Any tricks you can give me to keep these diapers in place?

    • Hi Lisa, I’m sorry you’re having trouble with the diapers slipping. It sounds like the diapers on the side are staying in place before the wheels are added b/c they are touching the ground and aren’t up in the air, where they have the ability to slip). That makes me think that you either need to add another diaper (if there isn’t enough room to add another diaper then you could try taking one or two diapers out, re-rolling them so they are tighter and then you should have room to add another tightly rolled diaper). You could also try making the elastic a little tighter or make the fabric/ribbon going around the bassinet tighter. I hope this helps!! If not, let me know and i’ll try to help you figure out what else you could do to make it work!! XO~Jessica
