DIY Diaper Babies

I previously shared a tutorial on how to make a DIY Bassinet Diaper Cake  and since the mom-to-be is having twins I made two diaper babies to go inside of the bassinet. I went back and forth trying to figure out how to make the diaper babies small enough to fit into the bassinet with items that the mom-to-be could use. I honestly didn’t decide how I was going to make the diaper babies until the night before I gave the Bassinet Diaper Cake to the mom-to-be and since I was rushing to get them finished I didn’t take pictures of every step (I took a few pictures but didn’t have enough to comfortable explain how to make them); however after several of my fabulous readers asked me if I could share how I made the diaper babies I decide to make another diaper baby so that I could take pictures of the steps I was previously missing. So without further ado here is a step-by-step tutorial on how to make a diaper baby or twin diaper babies for your DIY Bassinet Diaper Cake!!! 🙂

Okay, here is what you will need

  • (2) 2.5″ Styrofoam balls
  • 2 craft sticks (I used wavy paddle fans sticks that were leftover from my wedding programs)
  • 2 diapers
  • 2 pacifiers
  • 8 baby washcloth (4 washcloths per baby)
  • 1 baby towel
  • Push pins

Step 1: Take your Craft Stick and push it into the center of your Styrofoam Ball.

Step 2: Open a diaper and wrap it around the ball. Pin the diaper in place as you go using your push pins. I used 2 push pins (It’s okay if the top doesn’t look perfect because you’re going to be cover it with a hat (aka washcloth)

Step 3: Take your wash cloth and lay it face up. Then fold over the edge about 3/4″ and then fold it over again so that it will have a clean edge

Step 4: Wrap the washcloth around the top of the diaper head and then pin it in place

Step 5: Add Eyes to Diaper Head (I purchased the eyes from Michaels for $1.99)

Step 6: Fold one of your washcloths in half and wrap it around the top half of your craft stick. Pin it in place with a push pin.

Step 7: Fold another washcloth in half and wrap it around the bottom half of your craft stick. Pin it in place with a push pin.

Step 8: You are going to take another washcloth and wrap it around the entire craft stick. If the washcloth is longer than your stick fold it down just enough so that it is the length of your craft stick and then wrap it around so that it covers the two washcloths you have already pinned around your craft stick.

Step 10: You are going to swaddle your babies together in a baby towel. To do this you need to fold your towel so that it forms an upside down triangle. Lay the two babies in the center and then fold the left corner across the babies. Take the bottom corner and fold it up. Take the right corner and wrap it around the babies and then pin the towel in place with a push pin

Step 11: If you’re planning to put your diaper babies into a Bassinet Diaper Cake you need to first line the bottom of the bassinet with a receiving blanket.

Step 12: Place the swaddled diaper babies into the bassinet diaper cake

  2. I am also a huge fan of your creations. I have pinned some to my pinterest baby shower board. I love to make stuff but need help with designs (as most of my fellow crafters likely). However, I did design my own hospital door decoration for a new mother friend of mine. I would send you the tutorial but I’ve already given it. Plan on making another one for my daughter due in May. I could send pics & a tutorial of that one if you like.
